How to Write an Incredible Cover Letter

I get this question a lot; "Are cover letters still necessary?"

The short answer, yes they are. A more detailed answer is, you should think of your cover letter as a multi-purpose document. It allows the reader to have a vivid picture of who you are, before they have the pleasure of meeting you. If you create a strong cover letter, it can be used not only as a cover letter, but also as an email introduction and (or) a LinkedIn introduction.

Think of your cover letter as a mini sales pitch or better yet, think of it as your elevator pitch. You are providing the solution to the readers problem.

Below I am sharing the 4 steps to creating an incredible cover letter:

  1. Your Format - You want to make the cover letter easy to read. Short and to the point (1 page only). Create a cover letter that aligns with your resume; header, font, font size, and margins. I will note that if you are not sending a formal cover letter, instead using an email as your cover letter, this step does not apply.

  2. Personalize Your Letter - Rather than addressing your cover letter "To Whom It May Concern" find out who will be reading your letter and address it directly to them (if you are able). Also, be sure to make note of any personal connection you may have. One thing to remember is companies love to hire from referrals.

  3. HOOK Your Reader - Evoke emotion by telling your story in an authentic & personal way. Spark interest immediately by letting the reader know what interests you most about the company and the position.

  4. Your Proof - Prove to the reader that you are the answer to their problem. Frame the body of the letter about how you are exactly who they need in the open position.

As you close out your letter, tie everything together with your call to action. The purpose of the call to action is to get the hiring manager to take action and let them know of your excitement for the position.

Your cover letter is the perfect opportunity to let your personality shine.
